Thomas R. Walsh
Thomas grew up in Southeast Alaska in the town of Petersburg, a community steeped in the Alaskan commercial fishing industry. At the age of 12, Thomas began working as a deckhand on his father’s drift-gillnet vessel and went on to work on all manner of fishing boats, in multiple different fisheries across the state of Alaska. Growing up in a fishing community and having spent over a decade working as a commercial fisherman, Thomas is well versed in multiple aspects of the commercial fishing industry, from vessel ownership and operation, to processing, and international seafood marketing. Thomas is well aware of the difficulties associated with the business of commercial fishing and the complexities of vessel ownership, as well as the legal issues vessel owners and other industry members will inevitable encounter during their careers.
After many years in the commercial fishing industry, Thomas moved to Portland, Oregon to attend Reed College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in History. After college, Thomas spent time working in China as well as helping manage a start-up business in Portland. In 2017 Thomas earned his Juris Doctorate degree from Lewis & Clark Law School. In order to renew his involvement in the Pacific Northwest’s maritime industries, Thomas focused on international business and trade law, as well as international dispute resolution. While in law school Thomas organized an exchange program in order to study international trade law and European Union law in Istanbul, Turkey at Koç University, the top ranked law school in the country. In addition to his work at the Koç University, Thomas also worked with local non-profit organizations to provide legal assistance to refugees during the Syrian refugee crisis. Thomas is fluent in Italian and has spent time in Italy working at Tonucci & Partners, one of the top business law firms in the country. In Italy Thomas helped international business clients navigate the vagaries of Italian and European Union commercial law.
Thomas spends his free time building and racing motorcycles, biking, boxing and playing blues guitar.
